Intel takes a seat on the board of NFC Forum

LONDON – The NFC Forum, a non-profit industry association that advances the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, has announced that Intel has upgraded its membership to become a sponsor of the organization with the benefit of a being given a seat on the NFC board of directors.

Intel was previously a principal member of the organization.

NFC is a short-range communications channel that operates at 13.56-MHz at data rates up to about 500-kbit/s. It can support passive tags with preset information that can be powered up by the NFC reader. But it is also expected to become widely used for making financial payments by smartphone. The range of applications include: access control, transportation, healthcare, information collection and exchange, loyalty coupons and payments.

NFC Forum sponsors may designate individuals to run for Forum leadership positions, and each sponsor member may appoint one voting representative to all NFC Forum committees and working groups. Other privileges include proposing Forum initiatives and participating in the NFC Forum testing and certification program.

"Intel believes NFC has great potential to enhance user experiences via simplified and secure device interaction. We are excited to have the opportunity to contribute to its evolution and growth in adoption across multiple platforms," said Ed Agis, Intel representative and new board member of the NFC Forum.

NFC Forum sponsor members are: Barclaycard, Broadcom, Inside Secure, Intel, MasterCard Worldwide, Microsoft, NEC, Nokia, NTT Docomo, NXP, Renesas, Samsung, Sony, STMicroelectronics and Visa.
