Metcalfe seeks peace between warring comms camps

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Bob Metcalfe is trying to avert the next big war in the communications industry. Specifically, he is trying to get two competing sides of the debate over software-defined networks to form an alliance.

The father of Ethernet is an appropriate elder statesman for such a role. While spending a day back on the Xerox PARC campus where the technology got its start, he talked to a trio of reporters here about his peace efforts, his opinions on other issues of the day and plans for a 40th anniversary celebration for Ethernet.

Software-defined networking is an approach to making nets as programmable as computers. It’s being driven by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), a group of “mostly computer companies like Google,” Metcalfe said.

By contrast, much of today’s network traffic runs over carrier-class Ethernet systems made by members of the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF), a group of “carriers and companies like Cisco,” he said.

“It would be really boring if those two organizations wound up at war because we have done that five times before, so why do it again?” quipped the veteran of battles between his 3Com and Ethernet vs. IBM and Token Ring.

Metcalfe recently hosted a dinner between MEF chairman Nan Chen and ONF chair Dan Pitt. He also gave a speech encouraging MEF to embrace SDN and the two to forge an alliance.

"My secret weapon is the Ethernet 40th anniversary,” Metcalfe said. “It is really a project to unify the two and give peace a chance," he said.

“I also discovered no one really knows what SDN is,” he added.

Indeed, the industry has debated the fine points of software-defined networks for nearly two years. The technology could radically disrupt traditional comms systems vendors such as Cisco that implement network features in proprietary ASICs and software.

PORTLAND, Ore.--Farm animals may be the next big thing for MEMS sensors, now that international bovine-gear maker Dairymaster is hawking a stylish micro-electro-mechanical system collar for cows called the MooMonitor.

The stakes are huge, since there are over 250 million dairy cows worldwide, according to the UK's Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, and over 1 billion each of sheep and pigs, according to the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization. Dairymaster (Kerry, Ireland) is pioneering the use of MEMS sensors with cows while startups such as Anemon (Saint-Imier, Switzerland) are expanding from bovine into other livestock breeds.

"The MEMS industry should be taking a much closer look at agriculture and its related industries," said Alissa Fitzgerald, founder of the MEMS product development company A.M. Fitzgerald & Associates LLC (Burlingame, Calif.) "Agriculture could potentially be the next big market opportunity for MEMS sensors."

Qualcomm lifts sales target after record quarter

SAN FRANCISCO--Fabless chip giant Qualcomm Inc. Wednesday (Jan. 30) raised its sales target for the fiscal year after reporting record quarterly sales and profit that exceeded analysts’ expectations.

Qualcomm’s quarter was boosted by better than expected chip sales and licensing revenue, said Paul Jacobs, Qualcomm’s chairman and CEO, speaking to analysts following the quarterly report. “We are obviously off to an excellent start in fiscal 2013,” Jacobs said.

“We've completed a record quarter at Qualcomm and we are pleased to be increasing our fiscal 2013 guidance,” Jacobs said. “We are continuing to execute against our strategic priorities and we look forward to addressing the growing set of opportunities ahead.”

Qualcomm (San Diego) reported record quarterly sales of $6.02 billion, up 24 percent from the previous quarter and up 29 percent compared with the year ago quarter. The company reported a net income for the quarter of $2.2 billion, or $1.26 per diluted share, up 42 percent from the previous quarter and up 32 percent from the previous quarter.

"Qualcomm's 2012 financial results led all peers in growth and profitability, and shares look inexpensive," said Craig Berger, an analyst with FBR Capital Markets, in a report circulated Thursday.

Berger maintains an "outperform rating" and $79 price target on Qualcomm's stock. The stock price closed at $63.53 Wednesday, prior to the quarterly report.

Qualcomm reported better than expected shipments of chips in both developed countries and emerging regions, particularly in China. The company estimated that it sold between 233 million and 237 million 3G/4G chips at an average selling price of $224 to $230 per unit.

Qualcomm reported record shipments of mobile station modem (MSM) chips in the quarter. The firm said it shipped 182 million MSMS chips, up 29 percent sequentially and 17 percent year-over-year.

Jacobs said Qualcomm now has more than 225 CDMA licensees. “We continue to invest and innovate across a broad set of technologies and believe that our patent portfolio applicable to 3G and 4G products is the most widely licensed in the industry,” Jacobs said.

For the current quarter, Qualcomm said it expects sales to be between $5.8 billion and $6.3 billion, which would represent an year-over-year increase of 17 to 27 percent. For its current fiscal year, which closes in September, Qualcomm raised its sales target by $400 million to between $23.4 billion and $24.4 billion, which would represent a sequential increase of 22 to 28 percent.

Qualcomm also announced that Chief Financial Officer William (Bill) Keitel would retire in March. He will be replaced by George S. Davis, currently chief finanical officer at semiconductor equipment supplier Applied Materials Inc., effective March 11. Keitel, who has been Qualcomm’s CFO for the past 11 years, will assist with the transition and then serve as a special adviser to Jacobs for the remainder of the year.

Learning To Tell the Time Would Have Been So Much Easier With a One-Handed WatchEven though most of us grew up in a time when digital watches were the norm, learning how to read an analog clock face is a handy skill that would have been far easier to master were there only one moving hand like on these lovely Defakto watches.

This Stealthly Analog Smartwatch Can Be Your Little Secret Smartwatches can have some pretty useful functionality, but maybe you don't want to broadcast to the world that you're wearing one, or maybe you just prefer good old-fashioned analog. The Citizen Eco-Drive Proximity was made with you in mind.

The Proximity, while appearing to be a somewhat regular watch, actually has some small words written around its rim, words like "Mail" and "Call." Whenever your phone goes off, the second hand discretely jumps over to point at the relevant word, without affecting the time-keeping of the piece at large.

It's a neat idea, but there are a few downsides. It's only for iPhone, and iPhone 4S or newer at that and it's not particularly cheap either at $550. Granted it's also just a nice watch, so that's what you're really paying for. After all, it's a smartwatch that can't even tell you who is calling, but that's your trade-off for stealth, I suppose. PORTLAND, Ore.--IBM is installing a more general-purpose version of its artificially intelligent Watson cluster supercomputer at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The system was specifically architected for researchers whose aim is to deepen the AI's cognitive abilities as well as to explore novel new application areas.

The original Watson debuted two years ago when it beat the world champions in the game show Jeopardy. Since then, it has been cloned in versions designed to give medical advice to doctors, financial advice to securities traders, and retail advice to businesses.

Watson understands spoken language and can answer ad hoc questions about knowledge in its domain. Based on IBM's DeepQA technology--which RPI and seven universities help IBM develop as an open architecture--Watson can quickly sift through vast amounts of unstructured "Big Data" drilling-down to the fundamental answers to the queries put to it by humans.

For instance, in the healthcare field, Watson can analyze a patient's medical history and symptoms and in minutes compare them to case studies in textbooks, hospital databases, medical journals and all the latest news sources, helping doctors make the most accurate diagnoses and advise patients about the very latest therapy options available. Likewise, financial institutions and retailing are applying Watson similarly to their own Big Data.

RPI will aim to deepen Watson's cognitive abilities by broadening the number, types and sources of data it can draw on for answers. Researchers at RPI also plan to explore new applications of Watson in information technology (IT), telecommunications, business analytics (BA), commerce and financial services.

RPI's Watson will have roughly the same mass storage as the original--15 terabytes--but will allow up to 20 RPI researchers to access it simultaneously from various locations on its campus. The system was funded by IBM's Shared University Research (SUR) Award program, under which IBM will provide Rensselaer with Watson hardware, software and training. Watson will be located at the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations, which IBM was a partner in creating at RPI.

MADISON, Wis. -- Here we go again.

As soon as Research In Motion--which renamed itself BlackBerry--unveiled Wednesday (Jan. 30) its two new devices--Z10 and Q10--running on the company’s new BB10 operating system, the whole world is now talking about how the new devices failed to impress Wall Street analysts.

BlackBerry’s Z10 phone looks similar to Apple's iPhone 5, or any other new smartphone model. It features an 8- megapixel camera and high-definition video. BlackBerry’s Q10's touch screen is significantly smaller, so that it allows space for a physical QWERTY keyboard. It looks similar to recent BlackBerry Bold models.

The announcement, indeed, did not move the needle for the Canadian company. The company’s Nasdaq-listed shares closed down 12 percent Wednesday at $13.78.

Reuters reports that at least three financial analysts have downgraded the company’s stock.

In an era when a company’s (and/or a technology’s) worth is often measured by “like” tags from the financial community, I shouldn’t be surprised that the general public already seems to agree that BB10--and by extension the whole BlackBerry brand--is DOA.

Maybe so. But, just for the heck of it, let’s consider exactly what in the new Blackberry devices disappointed the financial community. Specifically, the two biggies were pricing and product delay.

Here are the facts we know as of Thursday morning:

Verizon Wireless said it would sell the Z10 for $199 with a two-year contract, or $149 with a three-year contract in the United States. Verizon will offer both Q10 and Z10 on its 4G LTE network. But the company did not announce pricing for Q10.

Sprint is only planning to carry the keyboard-equipped Q10 at this time, with no immediate plans to carry the touch-screen Z10 device. T-Mobile for now is said to be just planning to carry the touch-screen Z10. AT&T said that it will offer the Z10 and the Q10.

The point here is that no one has any information as to how much the keyboard-equipped Q10 is going to cost; nor how U.S. carriers other than Verizon are going to price either Z10 or Q10, let alone how much they will eventually cost in the “emerging markets.”

But apparently it's already been determined that $199 for Z10 is too expensive. And the financial analysts, according to Reuters, noted that “average sales prices might be too high for many emerging market users." They also raised questions about how quickly businesses would adopt the new devices.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The first boards to carry 25 Gbit/second serial signals could emerge from the factory this year, but they won’t be easy or inexpensive, said a contract manufacturing executive in an interview on the DesignCon show floor. New board materials are expected to be a key enabler with Panasonic’s Megtron-6 the flavor of the day, at least for initial products.

The struggles to deliver 25G links for 100 Gbit/s Ethernet core routers and switches and other high-end systems was the focus of many papers and panels at the event both this year and in 2012.

“The next thing I build if it succeeds will be [a 25G system],” said Brian Nelson, a manager of new product introductions at Sanmina Corp. (San Jose, Calif.). “It’s gotten past the talk stage with a great many test vehicles, and it’s becoming real now."

Megtron-6 is “the opening gambit…but not the end game” for most of the large backplane boards in the works, said Nelson. “Meg6 has been tested by all of them, it does what it’s supposed to but it’s relatively expensive."

Prices vary widely with some sources saying the Panasonic materials costs seven times as much as more commonly used lead-free FR4 materials. Others say the costs can be two to three times that of FR4 or less.

The costs are still far below so-called Teflon-based materials (aka polytetrafluoroethylene) that can range from 15 to 20 times the costs of FR4. The cost of moving to optical connections likely is even higher.

PORTLAND, Ore.--IBM is installing a more general-purpose version of its artificially intelligent Watson cluster supercomputer at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The system was specifically architected for researchers whose aim is to deepen the AI's cognitive abilities as well as to explore novel new application areas.

The original Watson debuted two years ago when it beat the world champions in the game show Jeopardy. Since then, it has been cloned in versions designed to give medical advice to doctors, financial advice to securities traders, and retail advice to businesses.

Watson understands spoken language and can answer ad hoc questions about knowledge in its domain. Based on IBM's DeepQA technology--which RPI and seven universities help IBM develop as an open architecture--Watson can quickly sift through vast amounts of unstructured "Big Data" drilling-down to the fundamental answers to the queries put to it by humans.

For instance, in the healthcare field, Watson can analyze a patient's medical history and symptoms and in minutes compare them to case studies in textbooks, hospital databases, medical journals and all the latest news sources, helping doctors make the most accurate diagnoses and advise patients about the very latest therapy options available. Likewise, financial institutions and retailing are applying Watson similarly to their own Big Data.

RPI will aim to deepen Watson's cognitive abilities by broadening the number, types and sources of data it can draw on for answers. Researchers at RPI also plan to explore new applications of Watson in information technology (IT), telecommunications, business analytics (BA), commerce and financial services.

RPI's Watson will have roughly the same mass storage as the original--15 terabytes--but will allow up to 20 RPI researchers to access it simultaneously from various locations on its campus. The system was funded by IBM's Shared University Research (SUR) Award program, under which IBM will provide Rensselaer with Watson hardware, software and training. Watson will be located at the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations, which IBM was a partner in creating at RPI.

Would You Wear a Google Smartwatch That Looked Like This? Whatever your opinion on the whole smartwatch thing is, don't worry/get excited; this isn't real. This is just a concept design called "Google Time" by Adrian Maciburko. That said, they look kind of, well, nice.

Of course for a smartwatch to be any good it'd also have to work well, unlike some others we've seen. But Google Now, with its attempts (and reasonable success) at getting to know you better than you know yourself, you could get something that's actually interesting. MADISON, Wisc. -- Here we go again.

As soon as Research In Motion--which renamed itself BlackBerry--unveiled Wednesday (Jan. 30) its two new devices--Z10 and Q10--running on the company’s new BB10 operating system, the whole world is now talking about how the new devices failed to impress Wall Street analysts.

BlackBerry’s Z10 phone looks similar to Apple's iPhone 5, or any other new smartphone model. It features an 8- megapixel camera and high-definition video. BlackBerry’s Q10's touch screen is significantly smaller, so that it allows space for a physical QWERTY keyboard. It looks similar to recent BlackBerry Bold models.

The announcement, indeed, did not move the needle for the Canadian company. The company’s Nasdaq-listed shares closed down 12 percent Wednesday at $13.78.

Reuters reports that at least three financial analysts have downgraded the company’s stock.

In an era when a company’s (and/or a technology’s) worth is often measured by “like” tags from the financial community, I shouldn’t be surprised that the general public already seems to agree that BB10--and by extension the whole BlackBerry brand--is DOA.

Maybe so. But, just for the heck of it, let’s consider exactly what in the new Blackberry devices disappointed the financial community. Specifically, the two biggies were pricing and product delay.

Here are the facts we know as of Thursday morning:

Verizon Wireless said it would sell the Z10 for $199 with a two-year contract, or $149 with a three-year contract in the United States. Verizon will offer both Q10 and Z10 on its 4G LTE network. But the company did not announce pricing for Q10.

Sprint is only planning to carry the keyboard-equipped Q10 at this time, with no immediate plans to carry the touch-screen Z10 device. T-Mobile for now is said to be just planning to carry the touch-screen Z10. AT&T said that it will offer the Z10 and the Q10.

The point here is that no one has any information as to how much the keyboard-equipped Q10 is going to cost; nor how U.S. carriers other than Verizon are going to price either Z10 or Q10, let alone how much they will eventually cost in the “emerging markets.”

But apparently it's already been determined that $199 for Z10 is too expensive. And the financial analysts, according to Reuters, noted that “average sales prices might be too high for many emerging market users." They also raised questions about how quickly businesses would adopt the new devices.

Simple Science Lets This Gorgeous Dive Watch Track Your DepthOris' new Aquis Depth Gauge might not be the first watch to let a diver track the depth of their underwater excursions, but it takes a unique approach to that functionality.

Instead of relying on electronics and sensors that can add bulk to a watch, the Aquis Depth Gauge features a thicker sapphire crystal with an air channel milled into the side that runs almost all the way around the dial. At the twelve o'clock position there's a small hole which lets water in when the diver gets deep enough for the surrounding pressure to compress the air in the channel. And using the numbers printed around the dial, they're able to read their depth by simply finding the spot where the water meets the air inside.

Known as a capillary depth gauge it's supposedly incredibly accurate, and there's absolutely no lag when taking a reading as it's perpetually being updated. However, it is lacking one important feature: the ability to remember what the diver's deepest depth was which is important to know when calculating a safe speed of ascent. So even if it does come in a badass waterproof briefcase full of tools and swappable straps, it's still kind of a bummer that Oris is asking $3,570 for a diving watch that might still require a separate piece of hardware.

  作为寿山石雕界中青年的中流砥柱,上世纪60年代末出生于福州鼓山的郑幼林却以巧夺天工的构思和娴熟的雕刻技艺,创作出数量颇多的当代田黄石雕精品.郑幼林在熟练掌握各种寿山石雕刻技艺的基础上,运用圆雕与高浮雕相结合、写意与写实相结合的技法,大胆采用夸张艺术创作田黄石雕,不但整体构图符合当代审美标准,而且细节也均刻画得惟妙惟肖、形神兼备.与此同时,虽然他大胆以极费石材的圆雕技法创作田黄石雕作品,却也总能设计出最节省原材料的作品,这让其在业界一炮打响;加上其不仅精通各种雕刻技法,而且将传统美学、西方美术理论、中西方哲学融入寿山石雕之中,创作出了系列技艺精湛、艺术品位高雅的寿山石雕佳作.由于郑幼林创作的童子、弥勒等题材作品皆栩栩如生、风格独特,显示了其精湛的雕刻技艺和独有的艺术韵味,深得高端藏家青睐,故请其加工田黄者络绎不绝,甚至有人为请其雕刻,宁愿排队等数年也不肯让其他人雕刻,而郑幼林也因雕刻田黄作品数量较多而被石雕界和收藏界称为“田黄专业户”.
