Redpine device packs Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee
SAN JOSE, Calif.–Redpine Signals Inc. is sampling a device that blends support for the latest Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Zigbee standards. It is geared to support the many wireless languages machine-to-machine applications must speak.The RS9113 M2MCombo supports dual-band 802.11n and dual-mode BT 4.0 in addition to Zigbee. Redpine (San Jose, Calif.) will ship the device before June in a variety of module form factors at a cost of $6 in 100,000-unit quantities.
Redpine aims to grab sockets in systems that already support multiple standards using separate chips.
“One of our thermostat customers uses our Wi-Fi module and our competitors’ Bluetooth and Zigbee modules,” said Venkat Mattela, chief executive of Redpine. “They will be replacing all those with our solution in the next generation design,” he said.
“Imagine a scenario of a gateway which talks to a medical sensor through BT LE, a smartphone through BT EDR2.1 and a washing machine through Zigbee and provides a network connection through dual band Wi-Fi,” Mattela said. “With the combo chip, you need just one module instead of four."
