Do the speakers and monitors of today sound better than those of yesterday That ultimately is a matter of opinion but I would say yes, they do sound better today when compared to old school speakers. One of the many wonders of modern sound technology is the Bose radio for instance. This little radio has the biggest sound you could ever imagine coming from such a small and modest radio. It's truly incredible as it fills a room up with crips clean sound and balanced frequencies for maximum listening pleasure even for critical ears.
Technology is improving at a rapid rate and it has been for some decades now. Look at JBL monitors and speakers which are widely accepted as top of the line audio equipment. JBL has long been known as a leader in sound technology and have been the favorite choice of many famous and not so famous music studio producers. Even still, JBL has managed to improve every year with new technology to enhance the listener experience.
Take for instance the JBL 4412a which will blow you off your chair with pure power. Remember how the old monitors from the seventies and eighties always had trouble with low end distortion and frequency separation Over the years some of those issues have been solved as with the 4412a. They use those titanium dome tweeters and a twelve inch woofer to handle maximum low frequency output from a near field or semi-near field monitor. It also is designed with transducer components for sharp and detailed close proximity listening.
This monitor has a power rating of 150 watts and can deliver top performance without a hitch at a sustained average output of 150 watts. The technology that I referred to earlier takes shape in the specially designed crossover which controls bi-amping and makes sure that the amplification is received by both the woofer and the tweeters. This prevents that merging that happens when the frequencies are not properly parsed.
By managing distortion and polar response the speakers of today offer more punchy sound and more importantly, more precise sound. The transducers that are used today are another trick in the modern bag. The transducer fix is such a relief for recording studio artists and engineers. There was always this problem with poor sounding acoustics in the control room making the mix sound heavy or damp. Now with the transducers integrated for close listening it negates the effect of the poor acoustics in the control room.
Things like that didn't exist back in the good old days. You were always having to creatively compensate for control room flatness and sub-par separation of low and high frequencies keeping you from achieving a professional sounding mix. But I suppose some will say that that was one of the arts of studio recording and should be relished by the connoisseur. I will pick modern over vintage nowadays. I still love vintage guitar amps and other vintage equipment but when it comes to studio monitors I'm going modern all the way.
