Brighter, glasses-free mobile 3D LCD Electronics News

MOBILE smartphone and tablet users could soon be seeing 3D content without the need for glasses, with Hitachi Display’s latest announcement,

Hitachi Displays has developed 720p resolution 3D IPS LCD panels for use on mobile devices.

With a 1280 by 720 resolution, the LCD panel utilises the lenticular lens approach, as opposed to the parallax barrier method (used in Nintendo 3DS, for example).

The problem, according to Hitachi, was that the parallax barrier system reduces the brightness of the 3D display. The lenticular lens approach makes for a brighter 3D image.

The technology is also said to reduce interference between the images for the left and right eyes, making seeing in 3D a much more relaxing experience.

The brightness of the screen varies from 400 cd/m2 (2D) to 470 cd/m2 (3D).Brighter, glasses-free mobile 3D LCD Electronics News
