MEMORY module manufacturers are turning their attention to external hard disk drives, as the growing popularity of thin and lightweight notebooks drives the use of external data storage.
Reports from Taiwan indicate memory module companies like Adata Technology, Transcend Information, PQI and Silicon Power have expanded their product offerings to include portable hard drives.
Technologies driving sales include USB 3.0 and solid-state drives (making good use of these firms’ memory expertise), and Apple’s push for Thunderbolt (most notably in the latest MacBook Air) is also expected to see that standard becoming a key market driver.
Transcend recently opened a new plant in Taipei. It has also introduced a high-capacity portable hard drive line.
