TOKYO University spin-off company Touchence has developed a soft-touch sensor which responds to interaction and pressure in 3D.
The current touch sensors used in devices like the iPad are two-dimensional. They react to touch, but are concealed behind a glass panel. While these sensors have their use for flat screens, robots are 3D objects and interact in a 3D environment. The 3D touch sensors allow robots to react to partial touch and varying degrees of pressure.
The sensor, called the Shokkaku Cube, is built out of foam-like material, which can be pinched, touched, or leaned into. Since the sensor is soft and has a fabric feel, it is hoped that it will also improve human-robot interactions.Soft-touch 3D sensor to boost robot interaction Electronics News
