SAN FRANCISCO—NTT Docomo Inc., Japan's largest wireless carrier, said Tuesday (Dec. 27) it reached a basic agreement with five companies— Fujitsu Ltd., Fujitsu Semiconductor Ltd., NEC Corp., Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.—to establish a fabless joint venture to develop and sell semiconductors for handsets and other mobile devices.
The joint venture, to be established by the end of March 2012, will develop feature-rich, small-size, low-power-consumption semiconductors equipped with modem functionality, NTT Docomo (Tokyo) said. It will focus on developing products for LTE and LTE-Advanced mobile communication standards, which will be sold in markets globally, the firm said.
NTT Docomo said the joint venture would be formed after all parties agree on details, which are now being worked out through consultation. NTT Docomo said it would invest about 450 million yen (about $5.8 million) to establish a wholly owned subsidiary, called Communication Platform Co., headed by Mitsunobu Komori, an executive vice president and chief technical officer of NTT Docomo, by the middle of January.
