SAN FRANCISCO—Foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) is considering making an investment in New York state, according to a report by Taiwan's Central News Agency.
According to the report, which cites Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, U.S. Congressman Bill Owens was set to visit Taipei Wednesday (Dec. 28) to discuss a possible investment by TSMC in New York, the state which Owens represents.
TSMC confirmed the report of Owens' visit but did not divulge any details, according to the report.
While the nature of TSMC's potential investment in New York state is unclear, the foundry giant is presumably considering building one or more fabs there. Globalfoundries, a challenger to TSMC, is currently building a fab in Saratoga County, N.Y., which the firm expects to put into production next year. New York reportedly offered Globalfoundries a rich package of incentives to locate a fab in the state.
