TOSHIBA will shut three of its semiconductor factories in Japan in the face of falling profits.
The reduced demand for electronics goods in the current economic climate means Toshiba will also ramp down production rate at a number of its facilities.
“The reorganisation will concentrate the front- and back-end production processes of six discrete semiconductor facilities into three major facilities: Hijimeji Operations-Semiconductor (Ibo-gun, Hyogo prefecture); Kaga Toshiba Electronics Corporation (Nomi, Ishikawa prefecture); and Buzen Toshiba Electronics Corporation (Buzen, Fukuoka prefecture),” Toshiba stated in its press release.
In October, Toshiba announced its net profit for the six months to September. This dropped 18.5 percent compared to the previous period due to the strong yen and repercussions of the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami catastrophe.
Toshiba will be reducing production of its six-inch wafers, while boosting eight-inch wafers.
