European retailers to take back e-waste for free

LARGE electronic retailers in Europe could be forced to take electronic waste and recycle it for free.

The European Parliament has approved of new rules which could see e-waste collection in the European Union boosted from 4kg per capital to around 20kg per capita by 2020.

The new rules stipulate that electronics goods stores which are larger than 400 square meters will need to accept small electronics items for disposal and recycling, free of charge without any need to purchase a new product.

The aim for the EU is to have 85 percent of electronic equipment recycled by 2020.

The new rules would also restrict the export of e-waste, a big problem for third world countries. According to the directives, equipment that is no longer under warranty can only be exported to non-OECD countries if they work properly, and they need to be sent properly.
